What is social media Social media can broadly be defined as Internet sites and apps designed around social interaction. I could argue that the Internet has always been a social invention, but instead I'll tell you the story of when I attended a friend's birth shower several years ago. I'd met this friend online, even though she lived in the same town, and at one point during the party, everyone in the room introduced themselves by name and LiveJournal username. LiveJournal was a blogging social networking service that predated MySpace and Facebook. I'm used to people my age socializing electronically, but when the grandmother-to-be also introduced herself by LiveJournal username, I knew social networks weren't just something kids used to find dates. The first step to selecting the right social media tools is to understand where your audience is and how they communicate online. In other words, don't just sign up for a bunch of social media sites thinking you'll do a little marketing of your app without first understanding where your buyers are and how they exchange information. If you have developed a really cool app for bowlers, you can do a search on different social media sites to see how many bowling fans there are in any given community. A search for bowling fans on Facebook, for example, reveals multiple fan groups. One fan group is shown in Figure 7.1.
When you hear the term social media, what comes to mind You're probably thinking of Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Digg, YouTube, and many other websites that enable you to interact within a community of users. But social media is much more. It also includes blogs, RSS feeds, LinkedIn, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, and other social marketing activities we will discuss in this chapter. One of the biggest mistakes developers make is thinking that using social media will generate leads and sales of their apps. In reality, social media sites are more about creating relationships with a community of users and potential buyers. Eventually, the community will become buyers if you've gone about your relationship building in the right way. In order to be successful with social media, you must establish yourself as a respected participant in your area of interest and earn the respect of that community. This takes time and steady work. You can spread the word about your app article or video online at Digg.com. Digg will post your submission immediately in Upcoming Stories, where other Digg members can find it. If the readers like your article, they will Digg it, meaning they will give it their approval. Once a submission reaches a large number of Diggs, your post can become one of the most read and it jumps to the home page in its category, where even more people will read it. Be prepared to post many articles to this site before one of them takes off. It's a lot of work but could be well worth it when you app get noticed in a very big way. A truly successful marketing campaign requires that you have a coordinated presentation of your message and offer for your buying audience. You will want to engage in multiple marketing touch points to get the word out, such as blogs, product reviews, and other social media tools. All of these delivery options presented to your prospects in a coordinated (or at least steady) fashion will lead them to purchase your app. In short, you have to develop a following for your app. As mentioned before, sometimes the pickup for an app is fast (usually involving a bit of luck) and other times the sales momentum takes more effort on your part. If you have a truly well-written app and it's not getting the downloads you deserve, it's time to roll out a marketing plan and use the ideas presented in this book to make more sales happen.
You can build your app to work with a number of very popular apps in the area of social media. Search the Android Market for popular apps around MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many others. Look for ways to enhance or expand the use of these social networking sites with your Android app.
When I explain Twitter at presentations, I tell everyone to think of it like a noisy party where everyone has to speak loudly. As you walk through the party, you can hear snippets of conversations, but you can't always be sure who is being addressed. I'm not the only one to make that observation. In fact, there's an entire book that uses the party analogy Social Media Is a Cocktail Party, by Jim Tobin and Lisa Braziel (CreateSpace, 2008).
LinkedIn started out as a site for business professionals to stay connected, and although it has morphed into much more, its primary purpose remains the same. Just like many social media sites, LinkedIn has added lots of features, such as complex search capabilities, advertising, job postings, and groups. Its power for you as an app marketer lies in the fact that there are literally thousands of groups you can review and join to take part in discussions and promote your apps. For example, a recent search of LinkedIn for Android apps revealed 28 such groups. An example of such a search is shown in Figure 7.7. They are sorted by group size by default, with the largest groups at the top of the list. A search of Android developers reveals 59 groups, some with more than 10,000 members
Sense is a user interface system based around widgets. Widgets are small, always-on applications that run on your phone Home screen for specific purposes, like showing weather information or posting Twitter updates. This is similar to Windows Gadgets on desktop computers. When Android 1.6 was only offering three screens for customization, Sense offered seven. The screens use scenes centered around common activities, such as work and social media, and HTC created several custom widgets to make using phone activities easier. Sense also ties some information together, such as combining phone contact information and Facebook.
I recommend that you view AdWords (and similar programs) as a way to drive immediate attention to your website because you have not established the site with organic traffic. As you optimize your site over time to appear higher in the search rankings, you should depend less and less on paid search for web placement. So, once you're up and running with all these social media services, many of which use similar posting formats, how do you manage your time posting to them You can take advantage of cross-posting tools and focus on the tool or format that is easiest or most rewarding for you. Increasingly, apps are offering built-in cross-posts to and from Twitter and Facebook.
