Show web suggestions Check to display suggestions for Google web searches below the Google search box as you type. Use My Location Check to include your location when using Google search and other Google services. When you check this option, you're asked whether you consent to allowing Google to use your location when providing these services. Search history Check to use suggestions from the web-based Google search history, from your Google Account.
The Google search box opens. You can also open Google search by touching the Search widget on the Home screen, if you have added it there. See Customizing the Home screen on page 46. As you type, matching items on your phone and suggestions from Google web search are added to the list of previously chosen search results. You can use the Search preferences to configure some aspects of Google web search (for example, whether it makes suggestions below the search box as you type), and what phone features you want to include in searches. You can also clear the list of recently chosen searches. See Search settings on page 328. The Browser opens, displaying results of a Google search on the web. Initially, the Google search box displays the All icon , indicating that it's configured to search both the web and to provide suggestions from both the web and your phone. But you can target your searches to just the web or to just a single application's information on your phone. 1 Open Google search. 2 Touch the icon at the left of the Google search box.
Many applications can make some or all of their information searchable from the Google search box. The applications whose information is searchable are included in searches targeted at all information, as suggestions below the box as you type. They also make their icons available so you can target your searches just to their information (see To target where you want to search on page 42). You can change which applications are targetable by Google search.
You can add one or more Search widgets to your Home screen, dedicated to searching in a particular place just the web or a specific application's information on your phone. When you touch a dedicated Search widget on your Home screen, it opens Google search with that location targeted by default. 3 Touch Google Search in the Choose widget menu.
SafeSearch Opens a dialog where you can set whether you want Google SafeSearch filtering to block some results when you use Google search by voice Block no search results (off), only explicit or offensive images (moderate), or both explicit or offensive text and images (strict).
When you fire up the web browser,you see Google's home page. Although that's all well and good, as you'll see in a bit, you have quite a few ways to search, so maybe you want to set your default page to be something other than Google search. Follow these steps to change your home page
F you do a Google search on What is a web application you will find more than 7,000 web pages that attempt to answer the question. The most common answer is that (1) it is an application that is accessed via a web browser over a network. The beauty of this definition is that, if designed carefully and targeted to the least common denominator of all web browsers, the application can run anywhere a browser is run, requiring no software modifications on the client side. Using this definition, a simple forms-based calculator is a web application.
Widgets Add any of a variety of miniature applications (widgets) to your Home screen, including a clock, a music player, a picture frame, the Google search bar, a power manager, a calendar that shows upcoming appointments, and a News & Weather widget. You can also download widgets from Android Market.
Most people think of Google, the search engine when they think of Google, but there's so much more to Google than meets the eye. Google is a search engine, and when you go to www.google.com, you can search for documents, images, products, and much more. But Google also has a whole suite of productivity applications that the G1 enables you to take full advantage of.
Make sure your app appears in the top listings of search engine results if possible. Use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to make sure your website will rank higher than those of competing free applications. This takes time to achieve this ranking, and you must have a website that showcases your app extremely well by utilizing key phrases and keywords for maximum effect. One of the other keys to high search rankings is to get many other sites link to your site. Establish a relationship with other sites that are complementary to yours and exchange links on each other's site. Additionally, a carefully placed article that you have written about your app or a press release announcing your will app will help bloggers and other sites to link to your website, thus raising your website in search engine rankings.
Google keeps upping the quality of the Android Market search engine. When the store was initially launched the search capabilities were fairly primitive. But, with each upgrade of the Android Market, the search capability seems to improve. Google is becoming sophisticated in properly identifying the right apps for the search terms entered. If your app is connecting to another popular app such as Twitter or Facebook, be sure to mention the app by name in the body of your copy. This can help your app to appear when someone does a search for these popular apps. You'll also want to add keywords to your web copy to assist people in locating your app. It is widely believed that the more keywords you use in your Android Market copy, the higher your app will appear in the search rankings. Don't overdo it, but a generous use of keywords can't hurt.
Your app page can be found in the search engines as well, which is going to help people find you. Additionally, when a visitor joins your fan page, the update is broadcast to all members of that person's group. Thus, he or she is helping you to spread the word about your app. For more information on creating a Facebook Fan page, refer to Chapter 7.
NOTE Avoid using shortened URLs when they're not necessary. Using a shortened URL means that you are relying on a third party to forward your link. That third party could go out of business or have an outage at any time, making you look unprofessional for having a broken link. In fact, this is exactly what happened to tr.im in April of 2010 when they announced that they were going out of the URL shortening business and ceasing all forwards at the end of 2010. Some URLs are also nicer than others when it comes to forwarding your links in a way that search engines can easily crawl.
At the bottom of your search results list are two buttons. Touching the button on the left, Edit search, simply allows you to tweak your search terms and run the search again (remember, pizza has two z's). To serve your search results to the Quick Search Box, you must first implement search functionality within your application as described in the previous section. searchSettingsDescription Used to describe your search results in the Settings menu. Note that your search results will not automatically be surfaced directly to the Quick Search Box. To avoid the possibility of misuse, adding new search providers requires users to opt-in.
As Android gains popularity, I'm sure you'll see more sources of information begin to spring up. There are already several blogs, websites, wikis, forums, and other information resources out there. App widgets are simply user interface elements added to the home screen. Previous Android editions had some of these (the analog clock, the Google search bar), but they were fixed in type and number. Now, not only does Android add in a couple of more app widgets (e.g., media player, picture frame), but users can add and remove app widgets, and developers can create their own (see Figure A-2).
As shown in Figure 4.1, there are two ways to focus on driving awareness to your Android app. The first way is on the Android Market itself or other Android app sites by specifying relevant keywords for searches and deploying other techniques to make your app stand out. The second way is by driving traffic to your own product website and then convincing visitors to go to the Android Market to buy your app. You will have more influence on driving traffic to your own site than on driving it to the Android Market. Both of these areas are discussed in greater detail in other parts of this book. However, the focus of this chapter is on identifying the target audience for your app a vital step to achieving sales success. The next step to writing your press release is to define your objectives for writing it. Understanding your goals and audience will help you position your press release for maximum results. Are you trying to get your app noticed by various reviewers or bloggers Are you trying to build your brand and drive traffic to your website Perhaps you are trying to generate revenue for your app and you want to create news that will cause readers to go to your product website or purchase your app.
Many people use Google Maps online it's one of the go-to websites for directions. If you perform a search for a location such as a business through Google's search engine, you'll probably find a link to Google Maps as one of the top search results, as shown in Figure 7.1. A Google search box is built into the Home screen of the Android phone you just need to sweep your finger to the left side of the screen to find it. The search on an Android-based phone, even the Android phone, is Google based. This makes sense, because Google is the driving force behind Android. But the Google search engine is also one of the easiest to use, and it returns some of the best search results on the Web.
Gmail is web-based Your messages are stored on Google servers, but you read, write, and organize messages with the Gmail application on your phone or by in a web browser. Because your mail is stored on Google servers, you can search your entire message history, backed by the speed and power of Google search.
Next, I searched all the Android Developer Forums6 to see whether anybody else was having the same problem. The groups all have search forms of their own, but the quickest and most accurate way to search the forums is just to use the Google search engine and search the entire Web. Using the same keywords (ImageView and matrix), I found a posting from 2009 that looked exactly the same. Unfortunately, there was no follow-up or workaround posted, but I knew I was on the right track.
Google is most famous for their search engine, but not far behind that comes the fame of Google Maps. When creating Android, the folks at Google could easily see the potential in LBS and how well that fit with their mapping expertise. Most LBS applications end up displaying a map. Meanwhile, Google already had the technology to display and update interactive maps, and the business processes in place to allow others to use those maps and add features for their own websites. It still required a leap to make that mapping technology available to application developers for mobile phones, but thankfully Google accomplished just that.
Google, Yahoo , and other search engines provide the capability to perform a paid search to locate your product website. Be very careful when employing any type of paid search because it will dramatically eat into your profits. You are basically paying for potential customers to click over to your site when they do a Google (or Yahoo ) search for your products or services. When they perform a search, your website will appear in the paid listings section of these search engines. When a user clicks over to your website, you are charged a fee for each click through. I recommend that you view AdWords (and similar programs) as a way to drive immediate attention to your website because you have not established the site with organic traffic. As you optimize your site over time to appear higher in the search rankings, you should depend less and less on paid search for web placement. Listings, including Android app directories. These listings can be free, but you can often upgrade your presence if you determine the site drives traffic to your business. Banner ads, skyscrapers, or other graphic advertisement can be a great way to drive traffic to your product website. Look at costs on the many app review sites available. The goal behind online campaigns is to drive traffic to your website or a specific landing page of your website. Look to place banners ads and paid listings on websites where folks who might be looking for your app would likely visit. Remember that you are paying for the exposure and click-through rates to your website. You must have a compelling offer to entice the click-through to convert to a lead.
The great thing about doing an electronic press release is that you can use images, video content, PDF files, and web links. These elements help you bring your press release to life, gain the attention of many readers, and increase your search rankings. If you're allowed by the online PR service, always include a graphic of your app's main screen or the app's icon in your press release. You can graphically convey what your app does in a split second with a graphic. Don't waste this opportunity to reach your readers.
If you want to read all your content in one place rather than posting it, you'll want an aggregator (aka feed reader). Feed readers take feeds from other sources and pile them into one place for easy reading. Tweets, blog posts, news items, and even Google searches are delivered as feeds that you can add to a feed reader, and many blogs add handy links for adding feeds. Each window has its own navigation history, equivalent to tabs in a browser in a desktop operating system (such as Windows, Macintosh or Linux). For example, if you did a Google web search in one window of the Android Browser, clicking on a link in the search results displays a web page in that same window, and then pressing BACK would to the search results page. Pressing BACK goes to a previous window only if the current window was launched from that previous window. If the user keeps pressing back, they will eventually leave the browser activity and return Home.
