Designing Applications Well

Three elements are needed for an excellent application a good idea, good coding, and good design. Often, the last element is paid the least attention because most developers work alone and are not graphic designers. Google must realize this because it has created a set of design guidelines icon design,App Widget design, activity and task design, and menu design. These can be found at ui_guidelines . are a result of the collaboration between a developer and graphic designer.A significant portion of an app's development time should be dedicated to considering the best design for an app.

Customizing the App Icon

Perfecting the display of your home screen icon across all Android devices is a graphic design issue that falls outside the scope of this book. But don't worry for now just replace the default PhoneGap icon.png files with a 56-pixel square .png, and Android will do a really good job of rendering it appropriately on various devices. For more details on launcher icons, please refer to Adding an Icon to the Home Screen on page 52. For the examples here, I'll be using a chocolate frosted donut with jimmies on a pink background.

Designers Notes

I'd also like to thank Dan Clark and Andrew Navaro for their tireless work on this game. Dan was helping me design the setting from the very start, when it was just a gleam in my eye. We spent many hours on the trip to and from the Origins game convention designing the characters and their stories, and he wrote many excellent story snippets and pieces of flavor text to get just the right feel. Andrew, for his part, really stepped up to bat on the graphic design and went above and beyond the call of duty to make the game gorgeous. Graphic Design Andrew Navaro

Dressing Up the Menu

Frankly, thanks to my abysmal graphic designer skills, this version of the UI couldn't be described as pretty. It probably also couldn't be described as good. The point is not to make fun of my poor sense of graphical design, although you're more than welcome to do so. The point is that this example should show you how to make your application look better than my example. Now you can use nearly anything to construct this menu.
