Receiving Messages

If you have set up your device to synchronize with email, Gmail should automatically update each time you receive a new message. (If you don't remember covering syncing your device, flip back to Chapter 3, "Basic Use of Your Android Phone"—we cover this in the "To Sync or Not to Sync" section near the end of the chapter.)

When you have Gmail open, the message updates on the screen and a notification tone sounds. When you're in any other application or on the home screen, a notification tone sounds and the @ sign appears in the Notification area of your phone.

To access Gmail from the message notification, open the window-shade notification area, shown in Figure 6.6, and touch the email notification. This takes you to your Gmail inbox.

If you're in your Gmail box and you want to know if you've received any new messages before signing out, you can refresh the page. Press the Menu key and then touch Refresh. The page loads briefly; you can see any changes immediately.
