Managing Apps Including Removal

You can manage and remove applications in a more involved process as well.

To further manage your applications, start from the Home screen. Press the Menu key and then select Settings from the menu that appears. On the settings screen, touch Applications. You're taken to the Application Settings page. From this page, you can manage how applications from unknown sources are downloaded. Place a check mark in the box to allow applications from unknown sources; deselect the option to disallow it.

We recommend keeping this option deselected unless you know that you'll need it. Applications from unknown sources can potentially harm your device.

Quick Launch

The next option on Application Settings is Quick Launch (see Figure 9.11). This option enables you to assign a keyboard combination to an application so that you can launch it from the keyboard without having to navigate back to the Home screen or the Apps menu.

To assign a keyboard combination to an application, follow these steps:

1. On the Quick Launch screen, touch a letter that has Assign Application in blue.

2. A list of available applications appears. Touch the application you want to assign a keyboard combination to.

3. The Quick Launch screen appears again, but this time, the letter that you chose has the application name and the keyboard combination to access it, as shown in Figure 9.12.

Use available Quick Launch letters to assign keyboard shortcuts to your favorite applications.

To clear a shortcut that you've assigned (or one that's preassigned), long-touch the shortcut. A window appears confirming that you want to clear the shortcut. Touch OK to clear it and return to the Quick Launch window, or touch Cancel to return to the Quick Launch window without clearing the shortcut.

Manage Applications

The next option on the Application Settings menu is Manage Applications.

Here you find another option for removing applications from the device. When you touch this option, it might take a few seconds for the applications screen to appear. This is because the system is examining the applications that are installed on your device and computing the space required for them.

When the screen appears, touch the application you want to manage. An Application Info page appears (shown in Figure 9.13) that tells you the amount of storage the application uses; it also shows the default options for the application and the permissions that application enables.

You can uninstall an application from the Application Info screen as well. Touch the Uninstall button and then touch OK on the confirmation page.

Development Settings

The last option on the Application Settings menu is Development. This menu has only two options: USB Debugging and Stay Awake.

The USB Debugging option enables you to put the device in debug mode when it's connected to a computer via a USB connection. This allows developers and programmers to debug the applications that they've created. Unless you are a developer or programmer, you probably won't need this option. The other option is Stay Awake. This sets your system to never go into sleep mode while it's charging. For a developer or programmer, this is helpful in keeping the device active during long periods of coding. But even if you're not a programmer or coder, you might find the option useful for keeping the device awake while it's charging. This is especially useful if you have a background or pictures on your home screen that you want to be able to view while the device is charging.
