Handling Broken Links

Broken links present an unprofessional look on a website. Avoid them as much as humanly possible. You should also create a customized 404 page that uses your clean template (described earlier) to return to the browser a useful page with the same navigational links and layout that users are accustomed to seeing throughout your website.

Tools are available for scanning websites and locating and reporting broken links, to help webmasters clean up their sites. Some of these are listed at the end of the chapter in the "External Links" section.

Obviously, maintaining a functional website with fresh content is a difficult task without using the proper tools. Along with tools for locating and reporting broken links, we have included a list of tools for many other aspects of web design, programming, and maintenance in the "External Links" section at the end of this chapter.
