Email Settings

Customizing your email in Gmail goes further than just labels and organization. A group of settings give you access to signatures and notification settings.

To access the settings for your email box, start in the Inbox. Press the Menu key and touch Settings. A Settings page like the one shown in Figure 6.14 appears.

You have two categories of settings: General Settings and Notification Settings.

General Settings

In General settings, you'll find two available options, Labels and Signature. You've already seen the Labels option, but here it isn't used to assign labels or view messages that you've labeled.

Here, the Labels option enables you to decide which labels you want to sync when your Gmail account syncs up. To sync with any label shown, touch it. A Sync All notation appears to the right of the label to indicate that all the messages in that folder will be synced during the next syncing process. To sync only recently added items, touch the same label a second time. To remove syncing capabilities from the label, touch it a third time (or until the label line shows no sync notification).

When you're done, press the Back key to return to the Settings page.

The other option you have in General Settings is the Signature option. When you touch the Signature option, a pop-up window appears, as shown in Figure 6.15. Type the message that you want to appear in the textbox provided, and then touch OK to save the signature. Keep in mind that you have no fancy formatting options, so signatures appear as plain messages appended to the end of your email. These messages will be added to all your outgoing messages.

Notification Settings

The other settings options govern how you're notified when new emails arrive. The first setting is Email Notifications. Placing a check mark in the box next to Email Notifications notifies you through the status bar when new emails arrive. To stop receiving notifications, deselect this option. The next option is Select Ringtone. Touching Select Ringtone brings up the Select a Ringtone menu. Touch one of the selections to hear the sound played. When you've found the sound that you want to set as the tone played when an email message comes in, touch OK. Your choice is saved and you're returned to the Settings page. If you decide not to change the tone, touch Cancel to keep your current settings and return to the Settings page.

The last notification option is to have your device vibrate when an email message comes through. To enable this option, place a check mark in the box to the right of Vibrate. Then each time a message comes through, your phone sounds a tone and vibrates (if you have set those options). You can deselect this option by removing the check mark from the box. We've covered a lot of information about Gmail for your Android phone. But Gmail is meant to work well on a Mobile platform, and there's no better mobile platform for it than Android. Using them together gives you a fullservice email account that helps you stay organized while you're communicating.
